Get Jacked: A Fitness-Themed Survival Game
Project Overview
Get Jacked is a quirky fitness-themed game that combines fast-paced combat, workout minigames, and light survival mechanics. Inspired by titles like Hotline Miami and Vampire Survivors, the project challenged our team to merge humor, strategy, and polished design into a cohesive experience.
My Contributions
As the Pixel Artist and Visual Designer, I led the creation of all visual assets and iterated on the game's art style to align with the project's goals. My key contributions included:
Sprite Creation and Redesign
Designed all in-game art assets, including characters, enemies (rats), gym equipment, and environments, using Aseprite. Transitioned assets from a 16x16 resolution to 32x32 mid-project, enabling richer detail without sacrificing the game's pixel art aesthetic.
Visual Consistency & Iteration
Established a unified visual style and color palette that enhanced clarity and gameplay readability. Optimized character animations to ensure smooth visuals for combat and workout sequences.
Collaborative Input
Worked closely with the programmer to align art assets with mechanics (e.g., character movement, combat visuals). Contributed to creative brainstorming for gameplay features and thematic elements.
Challenges and Growth
One of the biggest challenges was the mid-project pivot from 16x16 to 32x32 resolution, which required redesigning assets on a tight timeline. This experience taught me the importance of careful planning and committing to foundational design choices early in the development process.
Key Takeaways
Through this project, I:
• Strengthened my skills in pixel art for games, focusing on clarity, scalability, and animation.
• Gained experience working within a team on a fast-paced project and adapting visuals to evolving mechanics.
• Learned to balance creativity with scope—polishing core features instead of overcommitting to unnecessary details.
